Walled City

Derry is unique in several ways, one of which is because it is the oldest walled city in Europe. It was also the scene of a famous seige, when James II, after losing the English Civil War, came to Ireland to rouse support. The people of Derry kept James and his army out by closing the gates, thus beginning the seige of Derry. Ultimately 30,000 people inside the walls died from lack of resources. The city has since been a place of constant controvery surrounding religion with opposing catholic and protestant forces.
